Getting Started

The 1995 Take a Walk for Wildlife took place on Sunday, October 8, 1995.

One of the first sites to greet walk participants is our sign-up table with our cheerful volunteers. (Full size photo is 30K) This is Elizabeth Ruzich, one of our volunteers. She is taking a break from the sign-up table and doing, well, we don't quite know what she is doing, but she seems to be having a terrific time. Elizabeth made sure that all walkers signed in and out and asked for signatures on FOCUS's petition to Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of the Interior. In the larger photo, you can see FOCUS Director George Dargaty (blue jean jacket and glasses), FOCUS Director Tammy Murphy talking to George, and walkers.

This is Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge Assistant Manager David Frisque who attended the walk to answer questions about the Fish and Wildlife National Wildlife Refuge Program. (Full size photo is 20K.) David brought an aerial map of the Annex to show walk participants the relationship of the Annex to the communities boundaries. In the larger version of the photo, you can see walkers listening to David describe the refuge program and offer additional information about the wildlife habitat in the area.

Sue Whyte-Lemke and Tom Strunk work out walk details. (Full size photo is 15K.) These two folks cheerfully agreed to be "Parade Leaders" on the morning of the walk. Sue is an eight year member of the Maynard Conservation Commission and a dedicated FOCUS volunteer. Sue can be counted on to supply answers on wetlands issues and to lend a hand in advocacy for the aquisition of the Annex. Tom is the Fort Devens Annex Project Manager. Tom handles the day to day concerns of the Annex clean up and works with FOCUS. We are especially grateful that Tom was willing to give up a Sunday morning to join us on the walk.

This wide shot gets only about half of the crowd. (Full size photo is 25K.) Walkers are warned to stick to the marked trail and to stay with the group. As the Annex is still an Army facility, we are required to explain the rules of being in the Annex for a walk. Cindy gets this honor every year and you can see that the crowd is really excited to hear the same speech. (Yes, the excitement is a joke!)

This is the typical view that Annex visitors encounter. Warning signs everywhere. (Full size photo is 15K) Our hope is that after the Annex becomes a wildlife refuge, the entrance will be a bit less forbidding. The signs is the last thing visitors see before entering the Annex for a walk. Our photographer extraordinaire, Jane Evers, loves photographing these signs.

On to the walk!
