FOCUS - September 1995 - Letter Writing Campaign
Support for Wildlife Refuge Needed!
More information about the current letter-writing campaign to Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbit is available.
Terrific news! In late July, 1995, the US Fisheries and Wildlife Service officially requested the transfer of the entire 2,500 acres currently known as the Fort Devens Sudbury Training Annex.
We have all worked hard to have the Fort Devens Sudbury Annex cleaned up and be transferred to a wildlife refuge after clean up. So far we have had the following successes:
- May 1993: Maynard Town Meeting voted to endorse the transfer of the Annex to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (F&W) as a wildlife refuge.
- May 1995 and again in June of 1995: Stow Town Meeting also voted to endorse the Annex as a wildlife refuge.
- July / August 1995: Sudbury citizens collected over 1,000 signatures of residents on a petition endorsing the wildlife refuge.
Despite the town meeting votes and popular support, some town officials are still actively opposing the transfer of the Annex to US F&W.

How you can help!
We need personal letters voicing your support for the US Fish and Wildlife proposal. Your letter can be short and direct. Remember to tell Mr. Sakura:
- If you voted for this at a town meeting.
- If you believe the Annex is the most important natural resource for our communities.
- If you believe this is the best use for land that has been abused by the US Army for more than 40 years!
- And any other reasons you may have!
The sooner you send your letter, the more impact you will have!
