FOCUS: Senator Durand Endorses Refuge!

State Senator Bob Durand Supports Refuge!

On September 1, 1995, Maynard, Stow, and Hudson residents were elated to learn that State Senator Bob Durand has written to voice his strong support for transfer of the Annex to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a refuge. Senator Durand is the Chairman of the Massachusetts Senate Natural Reseources and Agriculture Committee and Vice-Chair of the Senate Ways and Means Committee.

In a ringing endorsement of the refuge proposal, Senator Durand wrote:

"I am writing at this time to reiterate my strong support for the transfer of control of the Fort Devens Annex from the Army to the Fisheries and Wildlife Service."

"As you know, the towns of Maynard and Stow have indicated their strong support for this endeavor. I agree that such a transfer would be the best use for the property to all involved, both in environmental and economic terms. We must confinue to look at the closing of Fort Devens as an opportunity to better the lives of people in the area. By preserving this portion of Fort Devens as open space, we will have accomplished this goal."

FOCUS would like to thank Senator Durand for his continued support of the designation of the Annex as a wildlife refuge and his support for the wishes of his constituents!
